Greg Stephens - Atlanta Race Report

|
This past
weekend April 9-11 Stephens Motorsports headed South to
the great state of Georgia for race 2 of the 2010 AMA
Dragbike Championship Series at Atlanta Dragway. It was
nice and warm and the weather looked great for the
entire weekend. After the weekend we had at Valdosta I
came into Atlanta hoping for a good showing. Both bikes
looked to be running good in testing on Friday so we
were excited to get the racing underway on Saturday. I
entered the ZX10 in the Pro E.T class for some extra
seat time and the little 600 in the Street E.T class,
which is one of the classes I am running with
championship hopes. First round of Pro E.T I drew a
tough one, multi time champion Andy Baumbach. The ZX10
ran cloce to the dial and I had a decent light but it
was no match for the .004 light Andy laid on me, and
Andy easily put me on the trailer. Saturdays Street E.T
race was one to remember. "The little 600 that could"
and I had a super day going seven hard rounds
against some of AMA's toughest riders for the race win!
I couldn't believe it! I didn't have the best light in
every round and the bike didn't always run right on the
dial but somehow I had pulled off a victory!! Sunday
morning came with confidence that it would be another
great day. First round of Street Fighter on the ZX10 I
left the starting line with a 5 tenths advantage and
stayed out in front until about the 1000 foot mark, then
when the bike went into 5th it missed just enough to let
my opponent around me and I was defeated by .030. It was
a very close race so I didn't beat myself up about the
loss. Sundays Street E.T race started out the same as
Saturdays race, and I started going rounds! I made it
down to 7 bikes which was the quarter finals were I
lifted of the throttle at the finish line to try to keep
from breaking out which in this case wasn't the smartest
thing to do, my opponent was able to sneak back around
me and beat me to the stripefor the victory by .016 (16
thousands)! All and all it was a great weekend and I was
happy to have a race win this early in the season.
Hopefully I will be writing you about many race wins
this season and if I'm really good maybe even a
championship at the end! So long for now and thanks
again for all of your support!!!
