Vol. 3, Issue 2

Person of the Week: Jamie Emery

By Keith S. Kizer

Born April 15, 1974 in Colton’s Point, Maryland, James Walter Emery grew up the son of a true motorcyclist. Jamie’s dad, Tom, a machinist by trade, has always been interested in motorcycles all his life and raised his children the same way. Tom used to take Jamie for rides all the time especially on Sunday morning rides to McDonalds for breakfast.

Jamie started riding at an early age on a Honda Trial 50. His first experience drag racing was his little 50 at the dirt drags at Slades Raceway in Surry, Virginia while his dad raced a 900cc Sportster in the Pro Gas class. Jamie’s next racing experience was motocross starting with an ’83 KX80 Kawasaki then YZ 125 and YZ 250 Yamaha’s.

At the ripe old age of 13, Jamie told his dad that he was ready for his bike, yes, the Sportster. Tom told him if he could hold it up, he could ride it. Since he was only 13, his only option was to dirt drag, which he did and went on to win many races at Slades plus Cumberland, Maryland.

When Jamie turned 16 he started racing AHDRA on the same bike in Pro Gas. One weekend while Tom was away on business, Jamie and his mom went to a race where Bill Furr had a Pro Fuel bike for sale. When Tom returned home, Jamie had a lot of convincing to do to pursue his dad into buying it. They ended up purchasing the bike and Jamie became the youngest fuel rider on the AHDRA and ECRA circuits.

In 1996 the Emery’s had a Top Fuel bike built by Bill Furr. They continued to race in AHDRA, ECRA, IHRA and raced in Prostar’s Funnybike against the imports. Jaime’s early success landed him into Ray Price’s Harley’s Drag Racing Museum in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Jaime stopped drag racing in 2006 and once again took up motocross to be able to race with his 6 year-old son Mathew. Jaime has managed to keep up his championship ways winning multiple championships in the 30+ class on his YZ450 Yamaha. This past season, Jaime started racing again in the Pro Comp class in the MIROCK Series aboard his 175ci PRP powered Harley and will compete in the whole MIROCK series this season.
